Well, I’m prepping for Eng 15X, and you are on my list!  I have a schedule from Barb dated March 4 and I checked out the student course schedule online and filled in some ‘holes’.  But I may be incorrect, so you may be on this list mistakenly.  Or you may not be on this list and in that case, um, we’ll figure something out.

This blog is a 2.0 attempt to communicate with everyone, both English instructors and library instructors.  I will add links and posts to things that might be helpful (as a library instructor), assignment ideas or tricks, or anything you would like to see.

There are a few newcomers to the 15X library gig, or perhaps some of you have not done the library component in awhile. Just to recap:

• We meet your class 2-3 times at the library
• Jennie Nelson has a ‘syllabus’ she likes you to use, and a time frame she likes you to work that coordinates assignments and library visits.
• I schedule most sessions Weeks 4, 5 and 6.
• The ‘oldtimers’ (152, 153 and some 151′s) do not have to adhere to this time frame (I don’t think…)
• I can schedule sessions for those classes whenever you wish, but if you do not contact me, I’ll just pick a time and email you.
• We love to link the library visit to an assignment.
• The assignment this year has been “find an issue or topic in your field of study” and apply to exploratory paper.
• This year we have had 100% buy in from the English Department.
• We (Comp Rhet Instructors and Library Instructors) feel it is valuable that the students come to the library, meet our resources, and do some basic research.
• Assignments are good.  I promise you, if they do not have a reason to research they just start walking into file cabinets and knocking over furniture.
• A librarian will be assigned to your class and will contact you a week ahead to meet with you one on one.  Just to make sure we give you what you want.

Spring Quarter we will be changing to Duplex printing.  Save $, save trees.  What this means is that when students print, the DEFAULT will be printing on both sides.  In order to print on ONE SIDE ONLY, they will need to change the default.

Not a big deal, but from what we are seeing in printing patterns, and combining that with economics, and being green — it seems like the best way to go.

We will post info all over the place, you will get emails, so will the students, there will be signs.

Did you know? and then various stats that could be useful for a instruction classes.    Karl Fisch is a high school teacher and maintains a blog called The Fischbowl.  He’s all about connecting technology and education.

In describing what a database is in comparison to google (based on the costs of databases).   I asked if they bought an expensive car, how they would treat it:

• you don’t go offroading with a BMW

rebecca uses the idea of a file cabinet when explaining databases

• Think of each database like a giant file cabinet. Each publication (New York Times, Seneca Review, History Today, Scientific American, etc.) has its own “file” in the cabinet. Your articles will come from a variety of those files.
